In 1971, Swanson enlisted in the Air Force and received paralegal, investigation and law enforcement training. In 1973, Swanson became the investigator for the United State Air Force Foreign Claims Commission in Taipei, Taiwan. He went on to investigate a variety of incidents, ranging from complex fraud to murder. Upon his leaving the Air Force in 1976, he had received numerous honors and awards for his service in law enforcement and as a paralegal, including the Air Force Commendation Medal. Tom Swanson entered the University of Florida in 1976 and obtained his undergraduate degree with 3.5 grade point average in less than two years. In 1978, he was accepted to South Texas College of Law and graduated in 1981, having finished his law studies well in advance of the three-year norm.
Since being licensed to practice law in 1981, Swanson has tried numerous cases in Texas, including personal injury, child custody and wrongful appropriation of trade secrets. In 1992, Mr. Swanson was licensed as a Private Security Consultant by the Texas Board of Private Investigators and Private Security Agencies.

Teaching:

Mr. Swanson has been teaching at the Center for Advanced Legal Studies since 1987 and was appointed as the Center’s Academic Dean in 2000, and has been quoted on his teaching techniques, “Give me students with a little bit of interest in the law and they'll have a whole lot of interest before they leave.” Swanson has taught most of the courses offered at the Center at one time or another and is currently teaching Introduction to Law and Ethics, Civil Procedure and Personal Injury. Students continue to rate him as an outstanding and demanding instructor.

    I enjoyed Mr. Swanson's teaching style and I truly miss those classes. Boy, I learned a lot and wish I could take them all again. He has a great group of instructors too!!!
