What about these short term paralegal courses I’ve seen advertised?

basic intermediate advanced expert

The National Association Federation of Paralegal Association (NFPA), has denounced in their Position Statement Regarding Short-Term Programs.  They believe "these programs not only provide a disservice to students who desire a paralegal certificate. They are also a disservice to the employer who expects someone with a paralegal education to have certain knowledge and skills upon graduation.”

The American Association for Paralegal Education (AAfPE) also has a Policy on Short-Term Programs, which states that  "these programs do a fundamental disservice to the legal profession by creating unrealistic expectations in both employers and students that a quality paralegal education has been delivered when such may not be the case."

Many such programs are attached to major universities through continuing education departments and can mistakenly be perceived to be academically connected as well.   The Center encourages anyone interested in pursuing a paralegal career to thoroughly investigate prospective programs to ensure that they meet the accepted minimum standard.
