Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 78a goes into effect today!

Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 78a goes into effect today, September 1, 2010. A civil case information sheet is now required for all new civil lawsuits and applications filed in the State of Texas (not just Harris County). Specifically, Rule 78a requires that the civil case information sheet must accompany the filing of an original petition and a post-judgment motion for modification or enforcement in a case arising under the Family Code. Further, the civil case information sheet must be signed by the attorney for the party filing the pleading or by the party.

Also, e-filers should be aware that if the petition or application is e-filed, the case information sheet must not be the lead document -- it should be uploaded as an attachment to the petition.

Andrea White is the keynote speaker for our August Graduation!

We are pleased to have Andrea White, author, motivational speaker, champion of education and former First Lady of Houston, as our keynote speaker for the August graduating class. White is a University of Texas graduate and a retired lawyer. She has also published three books of historical fiction, including, "Surviving Antarctica". Texas State Reading Association awarded her the Golden Spur award for the best book by Texas author.

Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies ranked 4^thplace for the most valuable college degree, according to Yahoo! Education. The degree takes about 2 years to complete and the average salary is $46,120 with a potential salary of $73,450. What’s best is that paralegals and legal assistants are expected to grow at a healthy 28% clip between 2008 and 2018, according to the Department of Labor.

Class Schedule

e-Discovery @ Work are online interactive courses taught by experienced instructors that meet two nights per week, two hours each session for eight weeks. There will be some homework assigned. Classes will be graded on a pass/fail basis and a formal, final exam will be given. Guest speakers will be included to provide you with various perspectives.

e-Discovery 101A begins July 20, 2010 meeting Tuesday and Wednesday. The class will meet 2 times per week, in the evening, 4:00 - 6:00 pm Pacific; 7:00 - 9:00 pm Eastern time.

e-Discovery, The Next Level begins August 3, 2010. Meets 2x per week, 2 hours each class. There will be another Next Level course starting this fall for those taking 101A who wish to continue on with The Next Level. You do not have to take e-Discovery 101A in order to take e-Discovery, the Next Level.

Center Helps Sponsor Pink Door' Event

The Center is proud to be a sponsor of Pink Door's first 5K Legacy Run/Walk.

Pink Door , founded by Houstonian Cortney Cole, offers single, divorced and widowed women survivors of any type of cancer the ability to start a new career path after cancer and take the first steps toward building a whole new life. With their six-month, five-step process, Pink Door helps women get a new look, a new outlook and new job-finding skills.

The Pink Door 5K is March 20th at the Stafford Convention Center, which is close to Hwy. 59 between Sugar Land and Missouri City.

Kicking off the Pink Door 5K Legacy Run/Walk weekend is the Total Body Expo, Houston's premier health and beauty show produced by Total Body magazine. The show begins Friday, March 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Stafford Convention Center at 10505 Cash Road in Stafford.

Center's Students Ready for Jury Duty

On Saturday, April 17th, 2010 nearly twenty of the Center's students have jury duty of a different kind. They are ready to participate in the University of Houston Law Center's Blakely Advocacy Institute Final Trials.

Final Trials are a culmination of a trial skills course at the Law Center. The law students are given a simulated case to prepare for trial. In the Final Trial, students try a case in a realistic setting, complete with judge and jury.

Several of the Center's students have signed on to serve on the mock jury. They hear the case, deliberate in open court, and give their final decision to the court.

This is just one more opportunity for the Center's students to gain knowledge and understanding, as well as to network within the legal profession.

Center Celebrates Texas Paralegal Day.

Texas Paralegal Day. October 23rd. We honor the work and progress of Paralegals across the great state of Texas and throughout the country.

Staff and students of the Center have been invited to attend the State Bar of Texas Paralegal Division in celebrating Texas Paralegal Day on October 22, 2009. Here is a brief history of the day taken from www.alamoparalegals.org to help celebrate and inform.

The State Bar of Texas is the first bar association in the United States to create a separate division for paralegals. What was originally "the Legal Assistants Division" and is now "The Paralegal Divison" of the State Bar of Texas (the"Division") was created on October 23, 1981.

On April 5, 1993, Texas Senate Concurrent Resolution 69 was signed by the President of the Senate, Bob Bullock, and the Speaker of the House, Pete Laney, commending the Division and the legal assistants of the State of Texas, and resolving that the 73rd Legislature of the State of Texas had declared October 23 as Texas Legal Assistants Day.

Beginning in 2005, the Texas House of Representatives signed proclamations acknowledging October 23rd as "Paralegal Day" (as a result of the Paralegal Divison's formal name change), for one or two years at a time. However, on Januaryy 22, 2009 the Texas Senate issued Proclamation No. 1144, declaring October 23 to be Texas Paralegal Day indefinitely.
